Sharing stories can be a powerful tool for growth, but reading books or picture books directly involves "Public Recitation Rights." It is crucial to understand the legal boundaries to avoid copyright disputes.

Where is the line?

  • Fair Use: Quoting short sentences, paragraphs, or sharing personal reviews is generally safe.

  • Infringement Risk: Reading long chapters or an entire book without permission often constitutes copyright infringement.

Key Legal Factors:

The law considers several factors to determine "Fair Use," including the purpose of use (commercial vs. non-profit), the nature of the work, the proportion used, and the potential impact on the original work's market value.

Firstory’s Recommendations & Policy:

  1. Get Authorization: Always contact the publisher or author to obtain written permission before starting a storytelling show.

  2. Originality is Key: Creating original stories or focusing on deep reviews/critiques is the safest approach.

  3. Takedown Policy: If we receive an infringement claim, we will notify the creator. If proof of authorization is not provided, Firstory will remove the content from all platforms within three (3) business days without further notice.
