Troubleshooting Unusual Show Analytics with an AI Assistant: Firstory MCP

A real-world example of how the Firstory AI data assistant (Beta) can help you query and troubleshoot your show's analytics.

What is Firstory MCP?

Firstory is beta testing a brand-new feature: Firstory MCP. Simply ask questions in plain language to look up all kinds of data about your show — no more flipping through dashboard charts one by one. For example: “Which of my recent episodes got the most plays?” “Which countries are my listeners from?” “Why did my downloads suddenly spike these past few days?” The AI can find the answers and interpret them for you.

Here’s a real-world example of how it can help.

A real case: catching an “abnormal spike” in downloads

A creator noticed an unusual download spike in their show’s dashboard on certain days: the numbers were unreasonably high, and they couldn’t figure out why.

They handed the question straight to Claude Code. After breaking the data down day by day and episode by episode through Firstory MCP, the AI found several key clues:

  • The traffic was spread across a large number of old episodes: the hundreds of downloads on the peak day were scattered evenly across 60+ old episodes, with no single episode standing out.

  • These episodes normally get almost no plays: many of them sat at zero for weeks before and after, yet each suddenly picked up a dozen or two downloads on the same day.

  • Almost all of the downloads were “unique”: downloads and unique downloads were nearly equal, meaning the traffic came from many different sources each fetching once — not real listeners playing episodes again.

  • It only happened on Apple / other RSS, while Spotify stayed flat: a classic sign of something hitting the RSS audio URLs directly.

Putting these clues together, the AI concluded this was bot traffic caused by a web crawler sweeping through the entire RSS feed in a short window — not real audience growth.

Questions like this come up from our users all the time. In the past, it was hard to go through every single episode one by one; now, with MCP pulling all episode data at once, you can quickly analyze what’s going on with your show.

What other data questions can Firstory MCP answer?

Beyond troubleshooting abnormal traffic, you can also ask:

  • Which episodes got the most plays in the last 30 days? What does the trend look like?”

  • “Which countries are my listeners from, and which platforms do they listen on?”

  • What are the key points of a certain episode? Summarize it for me.” (with content extraction)

  • “What are people saying in recent comments and Apple Podcasts reviews?”

  • Find every episode that mentions a certain topic for me.”

  • “How big is the listening gap between iOS / Android / web for this episode?”

FAQ

Q: The AI can see my data — is that safe?
A: The AI assistant can only read the show data you authorize (for queries only); it cannot modify or delete anything. Authorization and connection are both confirmed through your own account login.

Q: Does the data it finds match my dashboard?
A: Yes. The AI assistant reads from the same data source as the Firstory dashboard — it simply presents and interprets it through conversation.
